Ticket to Paradise Filming Locations — Where Was It Really Filmed?
Ticket to Paradise, the George Clooney and Julia Roberts romantic comedy now climbing the Netflix charts, is set in Bali. It was not filmed in Bali. If you have been staring at those glowing beaches and turquoise water wondering exactly where to book your own version of the trip, here is the short answer: you are looking at Australia.
The entire "Balinese" world of the film was built and shot in Queensland, Australia, mostly across the Whitsunday Islands. Below is exactly where each part of paradise actually is.
Why It Wasn't Filmed in Bali
The production fully intended to shoot in Bali. Then 2021 happened. With Indonesia's pandemic travel restrictions making a Bali shoot impossible, the filmmakers relocated the whole production to Australia, which had its own controlled quarantine systems in place. So the crew did the next best thing: they found stretches of Queensland coastline that could double for Indonesia and, in some cases, literally built Bali on top of them.
Hamilton Island and the Whitsundays
The heart of the film's paradise is Hamilton Island, in the Whitsundays off the Queensland coast, where the production set up for about four weeks in late 2021. Several of the movie's most postcard-perfect moments were shot here:
- Catseye Beach — the beachfront used for the pre-wedding party and the impromptu soccer match on the sand.
- One Tree Hill — Hamilton Island's famous lookout, used for sweeping island views.
- qualia — the five-star resort that served as the pre-wedding getaway location, and doubled as a base and accommodation for parts of the crew.
- The Bougainvillea Pool — the setting for the celebration scenes.
- Great Barrier Reef Airport — yes, the "arrival in Bali" airport is actually the Hamilton Island airport.
The Resort That Played Bali
The single most important location was Palm Bay Resort on Long Island, another Whitsundays spot. This is where the production constructed Balinese-style huts and scenery directly on the beachfront, essentially building a small, convincing slice of Bali out of set dressing and Queensland sand. Much of what reads on screen as a Balinese resort is this carefully dressed Australian beach.
The Arrival Beach and Other Spots
The scene where Georgia and David (Roberts and Clooney) arrive in "Bali" to see their daughter was filmed at Katie's Cove on Haslewood Island, a remote, idyllic Whitsundays beach reachable only by boat.
Beyond the islands, the production also used Tangalooma Island Resort on Moreton Island near Brisbane, and locations around Spring Hill in Brisbane, including a historic public pool, for some of the mainland scenes.
Can You Actually Visit?
This is the part most people are really searching for, so: yes. Unlike a lot of movie magic, almost every location here is a real, bookable destination. Hamilton Island, qualia, Palm Bay Resort, and the Tangalooma resort are all open to guests. The Whitsundays are one of Australia's premier holiday regions, and the Great Barrier Reef is right there. You can, more or less, book the exact paradise you saw on screen. You will just be saying "Australia," not "Bali," when you post the photos.
The Irony Worth Noting
There is something quietly funny about all of this. A film designed to sell the dream of Bali ended up being one of the great tourism advertisements for Queensland. Audiences fell in love with an island paradise and then learned the paradise was somewhere else entirely. The movie sold Bali, and Australia quietly cashed the check.
Which, honestly, is its own kind of perfect. Ticket to Paradise was always a story about things not going where you planned and turning out lovely anyway. The fact that its own production worked the same way feels less like an accident than a punchline.
