Why Anh Tells Adam the Truth in The Love Hypothesis

In The Love Hypothesis, Olive’s best friend Anh tells Adam, Olive’s estranged romantic partner, about Tom Benton’s harassment after discovering that Adam does not know what happened. Her intervention gives him a reason to confront a man he trusted. That conversation helps bring Olive and Adam back together. It also leaves a question for Adam to answer: why did he pull away without asking Olive what she wanted?

Prime Video’s romantic comedy stars Lili Reinhart as Olive Smith, a Stanford PhD student, and Tom Bateman as professor Adam Carlsen. Rachel Marsh plays Anh, the friend Olive hopes to reassure by pretending to date Adam. Olive wants Anh to feel free to pursue Jeremy, the man they have both liked. By the ending, Anh has become the person willing to question how this arrangement has hurt her friend.

Anh Already Knows the Relationship Began as an Act

Anh has understood that Olive and Adam started out pretending. Olive’s attempt to protect her friend’s feelings therefore rests on a mistaken assumption: Anh needs convincing. The reveal lets their friendship move past the work of keeping up appearances. Olive can finally talk about what the relationship has come to mean to her.

There is a fair objection to how neatly that reveal arrives. CinemaBlend’s Jessica Rawden found it insufficiently prepared and thought Olive’s roommate Malcolm seemed better placed to notice the deception. That criticism concerns whether the film earns its surprise. Anh’s role after the reveal raises a separate, more practical question: what does she do once Olive needs help?

Why Anh Tells Adam About Tom

Tom Benton uses a research opportunity to pressure Olive sexually. He is also Adam’s friend, which makes Adam’s ignorance consequential: the person Adam trusts professionally has threatened the woman he cares about. SlashFilm’s account of the ending identifies Anh as the person who brings the harassment to his attention. Adam then confronts Tom.

Director Claire Scanlon’s explanation to Swooon makes Anh’s decision specific. She checks whether Adam already knows, finds that he does not, and chooses to tell him because she cares about both of them. Anh approaches him as someone who can respond to the truth. His reaction then gives that trust a concrete test.

The two secrets require different responses from Anh. Letting the fake romance continue gives Olive room to discover her feelings. Once Tom’s conduct is involved, Adam’s lack of knowledge helps keep the couple apart. Anh changes what he knows. He still has to decide how to act on it, and how to speak to Olive afterward.

Olive Still Has Her Own Future to Secure

Adam has accepted Tom’s claim that their relationship could interfere with Olive’s research opportunity. He withdraws believing he is helping her. That makes his mistake especially damaging: he lets Tom explain Olive’s needs to him, while Olive gets no chance to say whether she wants him to leave.

Olive takes action over her research as well. High on Films’ account describes her approaching Dr. Aslan for help. Film Shrine’s comparison of the adaptation specifies that Olive proposes working in Aslan’s lab. Seeking another place for her research matters because Tom has used his job offer to pressure her. She can look for a future beyond the opportunity he controls.

Her reconciliation with Adam also requires a conversation. She challenges his withdrawal, he apologizes, and they acknowledge their feelings. Confronting Tom addresses his behavior; speaking honestly to Olive addresses Adam’s own. The distinction gives the reunion something more substantial than gratitude for a dramatic defense.

The two-year epilogue finds Olive and Anh with doctorates and laboratories of their own, while Olive and Adam remain together. Their careers give the ending a useful measure of what has survived the conflict. Anh helps Adam understand what happened. Olive gains the room to continue her research and chooses to resume the relationship. Both decisions need a place in the happy ending.
